Sermon Message

Text: Romans 12:9-21

You probably need to have a “few miles” on you to recall the song, “What the World Needs Now”*.

Whether being belted out by Jackie DeShannon or Dionne Warwick it was love that the world needed and which there was “just too little of.”

Of course, long before those lyrics were penned the apostle to the gentiles wrote, “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.  Be devoted to one another in love and honor others above yourself.”  There does appear to be too little of this in the world does there not?

In a hyper-partisan world those who disagree with our positions, opinions, preferences are “dis”-honored at every turn.  And in a social media driven world we appear to be devoted to...ourselves and we insist everyone else be devoted to us as well, to cling to that which we cling to and hate that which we hate.

What the world needs now is a movement devoted to Romans 12, for such is also the call of the One who is love incarnate.  While Paul instructs sincerity of love, Jesus embodies love in sincerity.

Discussing kingdom matters with a rich young man, Jesus loved him. Showing the full extent of His love He washed the feet of His disciples.  Great love has no one than this, He lay down His life for His friends.  It was that One who reminded us what the world needs...and obviously it needs it right now...”as I have loved you, love one another.”
